Sandra M. Upegui’s experience as a litigator and as in-house counsel helps her to better serve businesses on a diverse range of commercial transactional and litigation matters relating to corporate formation, contract negotiation, privacy and security, compliance, risk management, and business disputes. Prior to opening her own firm, Ms. Upegui was an Assistant General Counsel for the University of Miami for 5 ½ years. At the University, she handled various transactional, healthcare regulatory and litigation matters.
Before joining the University of Miami, Ms. Upegui was a litigation partner with Shutts & Bowen, LLP in the International Litigation Practice Group focusing her practice in various industries, including insurance, banking, real estate, and healthcare. She is a member of the Florida Bar and is admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
Her career has taught her to appreciate being a key member of the business team, looking at the big picture and being cost-effective. When working with clients, she enjoys taking on a role similar to being in-house counsel and being part of the business team.
Ms. Upegui received her J.D. from Florida State University College of Law, magna cum laude, where she was an active member of the Moot Court Team. She graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs cum laude. She studied abroad in Italy on three occasions, including a summer program hosted by Tulane University and the University of Siena, Italy, which included a special course study with former United States Chief Justice Rehnquist.
Ms. Upegui is fully bilingual in English and Spanish and she is also proficient in Italian. She is a member of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce.
